For some young people, hearing difficulties can go unnoticed because they have never known anything different.
They may miss an instruction, struggle to separate voices from classroom noise or seem as though they are not listening.
And neither they nor their family may realise hearing is part of the reason.
Your support can help more Year 9 students understand their hearing and, when a concern is identified, help their whānau know what comes next.

When William missed an instruction, it was easy to think he simply had not been listening.
But after taking part in our Year 9 School Hearing Screening Programme, a potential hearing concern was identified.
For the first time, some of the things William and his family had experienced began to make sense.
The programme also helped his family understand what should happen next, with reassurance, retesting, referral and ongoing support.
Identifying a potential hearing concern is only the beginning.
Our Year 9 School Hearing Screening Programme helps young people and their whānau understand what comes next, with screening, retesting where needed, guidance, referral pathways and follow-up support.
SCREEN: Hearing screening delivered at school.
FOLLOW UP: Retesting where further checking is needed.
GUIDE: Helping whānau understand the result and what may happen next.
REFER: Connecting families with appropriate support when required.
SUPPORT: Providing guidance as families move through the pathway.
But the programme also reaches thousands of students whose screening may not identify a hearing concern. Every school visit is an opportunity to share practical safe-listening information and help young people understand how to protect their hearing for the future.

William’s family had no reason to suspect that hearing might be contributing to the challenges they were seeing.
There may be other young people sitting in classrooms across Aotearoa in exactly the same position.
Your support can help us reach them. And right now, your gift can go twice as far. Give by 31 December and your donation will be doubled, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $10,000.
