Ways You Can Leave a Gift
There are different ways to include a charitable gift in your Will. Your lawyer can help you decide which option is right for you and help ensure your wishes are clearly reflected in your Will.
Three common types of gift:
- Fixed-sum gift: A fixed-sum gift allows you to leave a set amount.
- Residual gift:A residual gift allows you to leave all or part of what remains in your estate after your debts and expenses have been paid, and any other specific gifts have been made.
- Percentage gift: A percentage gift allows you to leave a chosen percentage of the residue of your estate or of the value of a particular asset. It is less likely to be affected by inflation than a fixed-sum gift because it remains proportionate as values change. It is also a helpful way to divide your estate among several people or organisations.
Other forms of gift may also be possible. Your lawyer can advise you on the option that best reflects your wishes and circumstances.

A gift in your Will may not be received for many years. Leaving your gift for general charitable purposes gives us the flexibility to respond to the needs of Deaf and hard of hearing New Zealanders at that time.

What details should I give my lawyer?
The official name of our charity is The National Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Manatopu Incorporated, registered charity CC10300.
Can I change my mind later?
Yes. Your Will is personal to you and can be updated if your circumstances or wishes change. We recommend speaking with your lawyer about any changes.
Can I support a particular area of your work?
You can discuss this with us. However, leaving a gift for general charitable purposes gives the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Foundation the greatest flexibility to respond to future needs.
Do I have to tell the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Foundation?
