Hearing Awareness Month is all about putting a spotlight on hearing health and raising awareness for the experiences of the 880,000+ New Zealanders who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Every year, organisations around New Zealand come together in March to celebrate Hearing Awareness Month. With demand for our programmes increasing, your support this Hearing Awareness Month enables us to reach the schools ready to take part in the school screening, the villages asking for visits, and the communities in need of support — ensuring care arrives when it's needed most.

A donation during our March appeal helps Deaf and hard of hearing New Zealanders feel supported, connected, and heard.

World Hearing Day

World Hearing Day, celebrated on 3 March, is a global call to protect hearing health by focusing on early action and strong support in the places people live, learn, and work.

This year, we’re bringing the World Health Organisation’s theme — From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children — to life through community, school, and workplace action across Aotearoa. From supporting families and young people to engaging employers and older adults, our focus is on early identification, prevention, and inclusive hearing health for all.

On World Hearing Day, our team will be:

  • Delivering hearing checks and engaging with families at Plunket community hubs

  • Hosting our Hearing Health presentation and providing hearing screening at Oceania Meadowbank in Auckland

  • Visiting secondary schools, including Shirley Boys' High School and Whakatāne High School, to conduct hearing screenings and support early identification

  • Facilitating workplace workshops focused on hearing awareness and prevention

You can learn more about the global World Hearing Day campaign and this year’s theme on the World Health Organisation website.

To stay up to date with our World Hearing Day activities, follow us on social media and join the conversation as it unfolds across the country.

Retirement Village Outreach

Our goal is to deliver our Hearing Health Outreach programme in 140 retirement villages.

Our essential outreach programme empowers residents by breaking the silence around hearing loss and dispelling stigma. We provide free on-site hearing checks, clean hearing aids, and teach basic sign language, so that Deaf and hard of hearing residents feel valued and understood.

This Hearing Awareness Month, we will be raising awareness for the experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing Kiwis living in assisted care by expanding our Hearing Health Outreach programme to include Auckland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch, and beyond.

Apply for a grant or scholarship!

Are you seeking a scholarship to further your education?

Are you organising an inspiring community event?

Or do you require financial support to purchase new hearing aids?

This Hearing Awareness Month, we are offering five grants that are open to New Zealanders who are Deaf or hard of hearing and hearing able people working in the Deaf and hearing sector.

We can help you to reach your goal!

Deaf Awareness in Sport

This Hearing Awareness Month, we're working alongside sports organisations to make participation safer, more inclusive, and more accessible for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

Through Game On! Deaf Awareness in Sports, we deliver practical workshops that help coaches, staff, and instructors understand hearing loss, improve communication, and remove barriers in sporting environments.

During Hearing Awareness Month, we'll be delivering workshops with Tennis Auckland and Dean Greenwood Swim School, supporting their teams to build confidence, stregthen inclusive coaching practices, and ensure Deaf and hard of hearing participants feel informed, included, and supported in sport.

If you'd like to learn more about our Deaf Awareness in Sport Programme or explore a workshop for your organisation, contact us below.

Hearing Screening in Schools

Hearing Awareness Month, we’ll be busy screening hearing at secondary schools across the country as part of our efforts to ensure Kiwis receive the timely diagnosis and hearing healthcare they need and are aware of the importance of looking after their hearing.
