Leading Innovation in NZSL Access

NFDHH is taking a leadership role in advancing accessible communication, investing in new technology in partnership with Kara Tech to translate more than 10,000 NZSL signs.

Using digital avatars to translate written content into NZSL, this work has the potential to significantly improve access to information across health, education, and public services - helping break down barriers for Deaf and hard of hearing New Zealanders whose first language is NZSL.

What the Deaf Community Told Us

We have completed the first round of consultation with the Deaf community, with feedback events held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

"89% of participants found the avatars easy to understand and accurate"

Feedback also highlighted areas for improvement, including more natural facial expressions, greater fluidity and realism.

This feedback is now shaping the next version of the avatars.

Improving and Testing the Next Version

We are working with Kara Tech to refine the avatars based on community feedback, with improvements already underway.

As part of this work, the next version of the avatars will be shared through our Sign for Change campaign - giving the Deaf community another opportunity to review and provide feedback. In the meantime, please feel to reach out to us with any questions or feedback before we launch this campaign at enquiries@nfdhh.org.nz

Sign for Change

This work sits alongside our Sign for Change campaign - helping make NZSL more visible and part of everyday life in Aotearoa.

As people across the country learn one NZSL sign a day, this project supports broader access to information in NZSL through technology.

Together, these initiatives are about one thing: making Aotearoa more inclusive for Deaf people.
