As we mark International Week of Deaf People (21-27 September 2026), we're continuing an important conversation with the Deaf community about our NZSL avatar.
Earlier this year, our first community consultation helped us select the avatar. Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback and helped shape that first step.
Since then, the avatar has been further developed. Its appearance, lighting, facial expressions and signing style have been updated to make it feel more natural and easier to understand.

This next survey is an opportunity to help shape the avatar's identity and share your initial thoughts about where it could potentially support access to information in NZSL. We're asking for:
Watch the short NZSL video to see the updated avatar and hear more about this next stage of the project.
The feedback shared through this survey will help inform our thinking and the next stage of the project.
This is not the final consultation about the avatar's future role. Further face-to-face and online consultation with the community will take place at a later stage before decisions are made about how and where the avatar may be used.
Your perspective matters, including where you think an avatar could be useful, where it may not be appropriate, and what we should consider as the project develops.
The survey is short and should only take a few minutes to complete.
Thank you for helping us continue to shape this project with the community.
